Gorilla Tracking Uganda.
Gorilla Tracking in Bwindi
Gorilla trekking in Bwindi is a very memorable experience. Watching the mountain gorillas in their natural habitat in Bwindi, feeding, playing, resting and defending the young gorillas is a sight to behold, especially when one is only standing a few minutes from the gentle giants and silverback gorillas of Bwindi in Uganda.
Gorilla tracking takes place in 4 sectors of Bwindi and these include, Rushaga, Buhoma, Ruhija and Nkuringo. The gorilla groups are assigned on the morning of the gorilla trek at 7am each morning.
After a pre-gorilla trekking briefing, gorilla trekkers are assigned into groups of 8. The gorilla treks are lead by ranger tracker guides who usually know how to spot the signs of the where the gorillas are on each day. The gorilla treks through the forest can last from just a few hours to a full day depending on the location of the mountain gorillas as they wander freely through the mountain forest.
Once the mountain gorillas are located, visitors spend an hour with them in order to minimise disturbance and the risk of transmission of diseases to the fragile gorillas.
In addition to tracking the gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable forest in Uganda, mountain gorillas can be tracked in Mgahinga in Uganda.
Gorilla Tracking in Mgahinga Gorilla .
When you track the gorillas in Mgahinga National Park, trekking expeditions usually commence from Ntebeko gate at 07:30am on a daily basis all year round. Tracking the Mgahinga gorillas lasts between 2 to 4 hours. Gorilla trekkers are advised that the Nyakagezi gorilla family ranges frequently into the mountain ranges side of Rwanda and DRC, but may only be tracked when their location is in Uganda.
Gorilla Permits Uganda.
In order to track the gorillas in Uganda, visitors need to be in possession of a gorilla permit for a specific date. Recently UWA introduced a smart card system, where the gorilla trekking details are loaded onto the card together with any other visitor products when they are visiting other Ugandan national parks.
The price of each gorilla permit effective January 1st, 2014 is US$600 when trekking in either Bwindi or Mgahinga National Parks. Our Uganda gorilla permit purchase process is similar to the one of acquiring a gorilla permit in Rwanda and can be read on these pages here;
