Sabyinyo Silverback lodge is sometimes referred to as Silverback Lodge. This is a beautiful lodge located in Rwanda gorilla trekking territory in Volcanoes National Park PNV. It is our preferred luxury accommodation of choice for gorilla trekking clients who appreciate luxury and creature comforts. Sabyinyo Silverback lodge Rwanda is only 15 minutes away from the gorilla trekking park headquarters of Volcanoes National Park PNV in Ruhengeri Rwanda . It is at the park headquarters that gorilla trekkers are briefed about gorilla trekking etiquette and divided into groups of 8 each before proceeding to the gorilla trekking trailheads in search of the gorilla families allocated to them for trekking.


Silverback lodge is a no-luxury spared safari lodge located situated in the foothills of the mighty Virunga Volcanoes that straddle across Rwanda, Uganda and Congo. On arrival to Sabinyo Silverback Lodge you will be wowed by the splendid and dramatic views of the volcanoes and the surrounding greater Virunga countryside. Silverback Lodge is a perfect and convenient base from which to explore this beautiful part of sub-saharan Africa. A number of treks can be conducted with the lodge as the base and these include, gorilla treks, tracking the golden monkeys in PNV, Dian Fossey grave treks, nature forest walks, walks to the twin lakes of Bulera and Ruhondo, day excursions to Gisenyi on the shores of Lake Kivu and with views of Congo from across the border in Goma.


Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge is built and managed by the famous Governors' Camp brand of Kenya. It is owned by a community trust, SACOLA which uses community fees from Silverback Lodge for soci--economic transformation of communities that live around Volcanoes National Park Rwanda, as well us promoting conservation efforts and initiatives of the local communities.

Early bookings for the lodge are advised especially in the peak season months of June, July. August, September, December and January when the lodge is usually oversubscribed. Book early and secure your accommodation at Silverback Lodge to avoid disappointment. There is many luxury accommodation options of Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge's class in PNV with the exception of Volcanoes Virunga Lodge.


All the cottages and suites at Silverback Lodge Rwanda are built from stone and local Rwandan terracotta tile roofs. Each of the cottages and suites feature massive open plan sitting areas, fireplaces, modern en-suite bathrooms finished with Venetian plaster, a dressing room and a sheltered private veranda for your private relaxation and unwinding while staying at the lodge.


The family suite at Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge has a 2nd bedroom with stylish en-suite bathroom. The main lodge building features a reception, sitting room with dining room, library, a games room, a responsible tourism / community awareness room, curio shop and washrooms. 3 large open fireplaces offer heating in the lodge rooms. 2 patio verandah areas offer imposing splendid and dramatic views t of the Virunga Volcanoes and the surrounding greater Virunga areas.


We have over the years been booking luxury gorilla trekking clients into Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge and have always received excellent reviews. Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge offers relaxing massage treatments to re-awaken your soul and body after an ardous gorilla trek and hike to meet the gentle giants of the Virungas-The mountain gorillas. The lodge also arranges guided bird watching walks, escorted nature walks into the forest, guided mountain bike rides in the local Virunga area. Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge is conveniently located pretty close to where all the action in the Volcanoes National Park Rwanda, take place including ,Gorilla trekking, golden monkey treks, as well as lots of treks and hikes to Karisimbi, Virunga and Bisoke Volcanoes. In addition visits to Ibyi'wacu cultural village are arranged, together with visits to local community projects, a local school, a local market in Musanze and to excursions to the recently opened up (December 2013)for tourism Musanze caves.


The lodge also features a restaurant and bar which serves most international wines and spirits. Local beers are served too. The meals are continental and local Rwanda cuisines can be provided on request. The Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge room rates are on full board basis, you thus do not have to worry about meals prices. We advise that you pack some warm clothing as the evenings and nights can get quite cold in the Virunga area because of the high altitude.

A bit of history:
Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge is a luxury lodge that was built and operated by Governors Camp of the famous Gorvernors' Camp Kenya brand. Silverback Lodge is owned by SACOLA a Community Trust that was set up to collect income from the lodge, and to use same to drive socio-economic development and conservation initiatives of the mountain gorillas and their habitat environs in the Kinigi area, which is in close proximity Volcanoes National Park Rwanda-PNV.


The socio-economic activities funded by Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge to date include

  • Setting up of vegetable gardens for purposes of a community farming project.
  • The reconstruction of a local primary school for 1600 pupils including construction of 10 classrooms.
  • A contribution to a rural electrification project
  • Construction and maintenance of local roads
  • Building of homes for locals affected by genocide
  • Setting up of initiatives that promote local artcrafts and other products.
  • Building of a Community Cultural Centre
  • Building of a small amphitheatre
  • Purchase of water tanks and water collection points for use by the local communities.
  • Repairs to the perimeter wall along Volcanoes National park’s to protect farmers' crops from buffalos.
  • Launching of "a family a cow project" which offers cows to needy people in the locality.
  • The building of 2 villages designed to house 126 formerly needy farmers in the surrounding Volcanoes National Park PNV Rwanda areas. The model village offers houses, water tanks and plots of land to people living close to the edge of the national .
  • The setting up of carpentry and other income generating businesses for the local community.
  • In addition SACOLA through income generated by Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge contributes to Gishwati Forest wildlife conservation wildlife conservation project.
  • Gishwati Forest is located 50km from PNV Rwanda in Gishwati Forest. Sabyiny Silverback Lodge have assisted with establishment of 2 hiking trails through Gishwati.
  • The hiking trails have immensely added to Gishwati Forest becoming an eco tourism destination in Rwanda. The lodge also provided financial support towards the habituation of a group of Chimpanzees in Gishwati forest. Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge has provided support towards conservation of wildlife in Buhanga Forest which is a small forest situated in the Musanze area.
  • Your stay will thus contribute immensely in sustaining these noble conservation and local community development initiative. A percentage of the accommodation fees goes towards these conservation efforts.

What is a gorilla permit?

What exactly is a gorilla permit and why do you need one?

A gorilla permit is a ticket that admits one into either Bwindi National Park in Uganda, Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda or Virunga National Park in DRC to visit with the gorillas. These gorilla permits are a hot item especially during the peak travel months of June, July, August, September, December and January. We therefore recommend that you contact us early enough with your gorilla trip requirements so that we purchase your gorilla permits for you well in advance before they sell out.  Upon purchase of your gorilla permit, we shall send you copies of the same and you will receive the originals of your gorilla permits on arrival to Uganda, Rwanda and DRC.
